Optimizing Outcomes

Course Overview
Optimizing outcomes provides clinicians (BCBA, LCSW, LMFT, Psychologists) who provide behavioral interventions to the I/DD community an analysis of the current research regarding ABA treatment and outcomes, particularly in the realm of hours of ABA provided. This course covers the history and current research of ABA dosage and relevant outcome measures for the I/DD population in the context of behavioral health treatment.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Synthesize and describe the research literature on hours “dosage” and outcomes for the autistic population.
  • Identify three constructive critiques of the original Lovaas study.
  • Describe at least two ways more recent studies on hours and outcomes in interventions based on ABA should impact treatment recommendations.
  • List at least three benefits of following the most recent research on fewer hours in ABA interventions.
  • Describe how low-dosage, parent-mediated models of ABA can produce meaningful outcomes.
  • Distinguish at least three benefits of following the most recent research on fewer hours in ABA interventions.

Course Outcomes

  • Clinicians will explore the historical context of the 30-40 hour per week ABA dosage recommendation and understand the significance of evidence-based practices in ABA treatment. Additionally, they will synthesize recent research showing that lower dosage ABA can be as effective as higher dosage ABA.
